AEL edged Anderlecht, BATE defeated Hapoel, Malaga blanked Panathinaikos, Dinamo beat Maribor, and Udinese held Braga in the UEFA Champions League on August 22, 2012.
AEL 2-1 Anderlecht
Greek side AEL got goals from Dossa Junior and Melo Rui Miguel to get the narrow victory. Anderlecht did level the match for 11 minutes but a 75th minute Milan Jovanovic red card ended any realistic chance of a draw. Jovanovic will be ineligible for the second leg.

BATE Borisov 2-0 Hapoel Kiryat Shmona
BATE cruised to a first leg win behind a Vitaly Rodionov brace. Hapoel’s Dusan Matovic was given a red card in the 70th minute and won’t be available for the second leg. BATE are looking for their second consecutive second in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Braga 1-1 Udinese
The visitors took a 1st half lead but Braga equalized to get a draw. It’s a great result for Udinese who now have the advantage with the upcoming second leg at Stadio Fruili.

Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 Maribor
Duje Cop and Milan Badelj provided the goals for both teams as Dinamo earned the first leg victory. Badelj scored an own goal as well as one for his side. Maribor are looking to make the Champions League Group Stage after a disappointing campaign in last season’s Europa League Group Stage.

Malaga 2-0 Panathinaikos
The Spanish side (Malaga) scored two first half goals and held onto the lead for the final 56 minutes. The result sets up an interesting second leg where Panathinaikos will need a 2-0 win to force extra time and three goal margin to advance if they concede any goals.
The Greek side are looking to return to the Group Stage for the first time since the 2010-11 season. This is the first time Malaga has participated in the UEFA Champions League.
