Anderlecht, BATE Borisov, Dinamo Zagreb, Malaga, and Braga all advanced to the Group Stage in the UEFA Champions League on August 28, 2012.

Anderlecht 2-0 AEL

The home side scored two late goals to secure their place in the Group Stage. AEL were able to hold onto their 2-1 lead from the first lead until the 81st minute when Anderlecht’s Deiudonne Mbokani scored. The goal was enough to give Anderlecht an away goal and a Oleksandr Yakovenko 89th minute goal sealed AEL’s fate. It will be a disappointing loss for AEL who were literally minutes away from advancing but Anderlecht were the stronger side and deserved the second leg win.

81′ Deiudonne Mbokani 1 – 0
89′ Oleksandr Yakovenko 2 – 0

Hapoel Kiryat Shmona 1-1 BATE

Israeli side Hapoel couldn’t overcome a 0-2 deficit from the first leg as BATE advanced. It was a good start for the home side with a 1-0 lead on a 67th minute goal but BATE still led 2-1 on aggregate. The Belarusian side scored a stoppage time to make the final aggregate score 1-3.

Udinese 1-1 (4-5 on pens) Braga

Braga stunned the home crowd with a win on penalty kicks against Serie A side Udinese. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg so extra time was needed. In the penalty shoot-out, Braga converted all of their kicks while Udinese’s Maicosuel had his shot saved in the second round. Udinese will go into the UEFA Europa League Group Stage.

25′ Pablo Armero 1 – 0
72′ 1 – 1 Ressureicao Ruben Micael

Maribor 0-1 Dinamo Zagreb

Tonel scored the lone goal of the match as Dinamo Zagreb won the second leg and 1-3 on aggregate. Dinamo move into the Group Stage while Maribor drop down into the Europa League.

12′ 0 – 1 Tonel
85′ Soares Arghus (red card)

Panathinaikos 0-0 Malaga

Spanish side Malaga held their opponents scoreless as they advanced on the strength of a 2-0 first leg victory. Both teams were two of the stronger in the play-off round and Panathinaikos will likely have a good chance to advance in the Europa League Group Stage.
