Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, Norwich City, Reading, and Liverpool all won in the English Capital One (Football League) Cup on September 26, 2012.

Arsenal 6-1 Coventry City

The Gunners had little trouble against lower division side Coventry City. Theo Walcott had a brace while summer signing Olivier Giroud missed a chance to get a brace with a failed penalty kick. Coventry did score in the second half but was down 4-0 at that point and ended up conceding two more goals in the final 10 minutes.

39′ Olivier Giroud 1 – 0
51′ Olivier Giroud (pen miss)
57′ Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 2 – 0
63′ Andrei Arshavin 3 – 0
74′ Theo Walcott 4 – 0
78′ 4 – 1 Callum Ball
80′ Ignasi Miquel 5 – 1
90′ Theo Walcott 6 – 1

Carlisle United 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Another result that’s not very surprising as Tottenham have a much deeper squad than the lower division Carlisle United. Jan Vertonghen, Andros Townsend, and Gylfi Sigurdsson provided the goals for Tottenham.

37′ 0 – 1 Jan Vertonghen
53′ 0 – 2 Andros Townsend
89′ 0 – 3 Gylfi Sigurdsson

Manchester United 2-1 Newcastle United

Anderson and Tom Cleverly both scored to put the Red Devils into the next round. Newcastle’s Cisse cut the lead in half in the 62nd minute but that’s as close as it would get.

44′ Anderson 1 – 0
58′ Tom Cleverley 2 – 0
62′ 2 – 1 Papiss Demba Cisse

Norwich City 1-0 Doncaster Rovers

The lowest scoring match of the evening as Norwich’s Alexander Tettey scored the match winner in the 26th minute.

26′ Alexander Tettey 1 – 0

Queens Park Rangers 2-3 Reading

Reading came from behind two different times and ended winning with a late second half goal from Pavel Pogrebnyak. Neither team is expected to go far in this competition as their main concerns are avoiding relegation from the EPL.

14′ David Hoilett 1 – 0
16′ 1 – 1 Kaspars Gorkss
71′ Djibril Cissé 2 – 1
76′ 2 – 2 Nicky Shorey
81′ 2 – 3 Pavel Pogrebnyak
90′ +3′ Pavel Pogrebnyak (pen miss)

West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Liverpool

Defending League Cup champions Liverpool were down early but eventually advanced thanks to a Nuri Sahin brace. Along with the Europa League, this is a competition where Liverpool will mainly rely on their younger players.

3′ Gabriel Tamas 1 – 0
17′ 1 – 1 Nuri Sahin
82′ 1 – 2 Nuri Sahin
