Italian Serie A – Recap – January 19-20, 2013
Juventus extended at the top of the table, AC Milan improved moved up to sixth, and Siena earned a crucial victory at home in the Italian Serie A on January 19th and 20th.
Juve crushes Udinese
Leaders Juventus pushed their lead back up to five points with a dominating victory over Udinese on Saturday. It’s a strong victory for Juve who had struggled recently and had their lead diminished. While there’s still several matches left this season, Juventus are still the favorites to win the title and might only be derailed by a deep run in the UEFA Champions League.
Milan move up
AC Milan, who have looked a shell of the team from a few seasons ago, earned a crucial win to move up to sixth place. The win has them within nine points of third place Lazio, who are currently in the last UEFA Champions League spot. There’s not a lot of confidence that Milan will finish in the top three but they could salvage their season by knocking out Barcelona in the UCL round of 16.
Bottom three doesn’t change
The last three teams in the table didn’t change this weekend but Siena and Palermo both got results. Siena, who would be out of the relegation zone if not for a point deduction, look the most likely to avoid relegation. If they can continue their current pace, they will survive. The same can’t necessary be said for Palermo and Genoa.
