It was a successful campaign for two Americans who played major roles for their clubs in the German Bundesliga. Michael Bradley continues to be a regular starter in the midfield for Borussia Monchengladbach while Steve Cherundolo played regularly at right back for Hannover 96. The other American who is on a Bundesliga side is Sal Zizzo who tore an ACL early in the season and only played 15 minutes as a substitute for Hannover 96.

Below is a full recap of Cherundolo’s and Bradley’s seasons with their clubs.

Americans Abroad In The German Bundesliga 2009-10 Season Review

Michael Bradley

Bradley played most of the season for Monchengladbach who finished middle of the table. Unlike last season, they didn’t have to face a relegation battle in the final weeks. Bradley played a central/holding midfield role for the club and has two goals and one assists in the 2009-10 Bundesliga season. While his goals were down from the 08-09 season, Bradley is continuing to grow into a dependable and solid player. He will be on the World Cup roster and very likely to start barring any injury.

The American could stay in Monchengladbach for next season but could have options to transfer to another league after the World Cup. There have been a few rumors about Bradley transferring to another league such as the EPL. Recently, former USA national Eric Wynalda stated that Liverpool was a possibility but there have been no reports confirming this or any other EPL club with Bradley. His future is unknown but a good performance in the World Cup would open the door to moving to England.

Cherundolo had a few injuries during the year but overall was a solid starter in the back line for Hannover 96. He’s had a solid career in Germany and will likely be on the USA roster for South Africa. Hannover almost was relegated but did win on the final match-day to stay in the top division. The American had one goal and two assists during the 2009-10 season. He’s likely to stay with the club and could even retire there as well.

Michael Bradley and Steve Cherundolo continued to get regular playing time for their clubs in the German Bundesliga. Both started for their teams on Saturday, April 24, 2010 but with varying results. Other players in German clubs include Sal Zizzo but he remains sidelined with injury and hasn’t suited up for a match since September of 2009. Below is a full recap of Bradley and Cherundolo.

Americans Abroad In The German Bundesliga – Saturday, April 24, 2010

Michael Bradley – Video Highlights

Bradley and Borussia Monchengladbach earned a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich on Saturday. Bradley played the full match and has been a consistent player in a center/defensive midfield role. He hasn’t scored many goals but is starting almost every match and remains a lock and likely starter for South Africa.

Steve Cherundolo – Video Highlights

Cherundolo played 85 minutes as Hannover 96 lost 0-3 to Bayer Leverkusen. Hannover are in the relegation zone but only one point behind 15th and 14th place. Their goal difference is weaker than the clubs around them so they will likely need a 3-4 points to secure safety. Cherundolo is a veteran player who will be on the roster but likely be a back-up to Jonathon Spector at right back.

Tim Howard got a win in the EPL for Everton while Marcus Hahnemann earned a draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Other Americans playing in England were Jozy Altidore, Jay DeMerit, and Jemal Johnson. In Germany, Michael Bradley and Steve Cherundolo both played 90 minutes but their clubs lost.

Here’s a recap along with video highlights (not available for every match) of several Americans who were playing in Europe on Saturday, April 17, 2010 in the top leagues.

Americans Abroad Recap and Video Highlights – Saturday, April 17, 2010

Tim Howard – Video Highlights

He played the full match for Everton in their 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers. He had four saves in the match.

Jozy Altidore – Video Highlights

He came on as a second half substitute for Hull city who played to a 0-0 draw with Birmingham City. He helped to create a few chances but didn’t have any shots on goal.

Marcus Hahnemann – Video Highlights

The American goalkeeper played the full match for Wolves as they earned a 0-0 draw against Fulham. He has been solid all season and could be challenging for the second spot behind Howard.

Michael Bradley – Video Highlights

Bradley played the full match as Borussia Monchengladbach lost 3-1 to Schalke. He’s only scored two goals this season but has been a regular starter and often is in a defensive midfield role.

Steve Cherundolo – Video Highlights

The American defender and Hannover 96 got crushed 7-0 by Bayern Munich on Saturday. They were outmatched from the start and allowed four second half goals. Cherundolo remains a consistent starter and one of the most experienced players for the United States on the back line.

Jay DeMerit -

DeMerit played the full match as Watford lost 1-4 at Leicester City. After injures earlier in the season, he’s been a regular starter but Watford has struggled and only 3 points above the last relegation spot.

Jemal Johnson -

He played the 79 minutes for Stockport County who lost 0-2 at Leyton Orient. The club will be relegated to the English League Two but Johnson will likely return to MK Dons next season as he is only on loan to Stockport.

It’s only his second goal in 12 games in the Bundesliga this season but Bradley has largely been playing a defensive/holding midfield position.

Brad Friedel (GK) – Aston Villa beat Manchester United 1-0 – 4 saves – Video Highlights

Friedel and Aston Villa had a great win as they beat Man U at Old Trafford on Saturday. The American goalkeeper now has 5 clean sheets through 16 games. Friedel has arguably been one of if not the best goalkeeper in the Premiership in the last few seasons. He’s also been a consistent player with over 200 EPL starts in a row. Villa is now in 4th place and is looking for a spot in Europe next season (Europa or Champions League).

Marcus Hahnemann (GK) – Wolverhampton beat Tottenham 1-0 – 7 saves – Video Highlights

Hahnemann has been the back-up goalkeeper for Wolves for most of the season but has started the last three matches. They’ve been in good form, winning 2 out 3 in the EPL, including a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur. The American goalkeeper is making the most of his chance to start and could be moving up on the USA depth chart. Right now, he’s behind Brad Guzan as the number 3 goalkeeper but could move up with regular playing time for Wolves.

Tim Howard (GK) – Everton drew with Chelsea 3-3 – 4 saves – Video Highlights

Howard made 4 saves as Everton earned a point at Stamford Bridge in an entertaining 3-3 match. Everton is struggling this season but Howard remains a stable force as goalkeeper. He currently has 2 clean sheets this season and soon could be joined by Landon Donovan who is in talks about a loan to Everton in the winter. Everton are 15th in the league table and only 3 points above the relegation zone. The poor start from Everton has not been Howard’s fault as his defense has let him down.

Clint Dempsey (MF) – Fulham drew with Burnley 1-1 – Video Highlights

Dempsey had three shots as he played the full match for Fulham against Burnley on Saturday. It was a tight match and a good result for Fulham as Burnley has been very strong at home this season. Dempsey remains one of the most consistent and top performers for Fulham this season as they are in 9th place with 23 points.

Steve Cherundolo (RB) – Hannover 96 lost to Borussia Monchengladbach 3-5 – Video Highlights

Cherundolo started and played 69 minutes in the match for Hannover 96. With the club down they had to take chances and that included taking out Cherundolo for a more offensive line-up. He’s been a regular starter for the club at right back and they are now 13th in the Bundesliga table.

Jozy Altidore (ST) – Hull City drew with Blackburn 0-0 – Video Highlights

Jozy came in on the 65th minute for Hull City as the match ended in a 0-0 draw. Altidore has yet to score in the Premiership but is getting regular playing time each week. Hull City is now 16th place with 17 points and 3 above the relegation zone.

Jay DeMerit (CB) – Watford lost to Derby County 0-1

DeMerit has returned from an eye injury and started his first match since August for Watford as they lost to Derby County on Saturday in the English Championship. Watford are currently in the middle of the Championship table with 30 points.

Clint Dempsey, Jonathan Spector, Jozy Altidore, and Tim Howard were playing in the English Premier League while Carlos Bocanegra was with Stade Rennais in France. Kenny Cooper continues to play for Bundesliga 2 side 1860 Munich and Steve Cherundolo is a regular starter for Hannover 96. In the Danish league, Marcus Tracy scored for Aalborg and Michael Parkhurst played for FC midtjylland. Here’s the full recap along with video highlights for these Americans playing abroad in the to European leagues for Sunday, November 9, 2009.

Clint Dempsey (MF) – Fulham drew 1-1 with Wigan – 1 goal – Video Highlights

Dempsey continues to play a major role at Fulham and scored their only goal on Sunday against Wigan Athletic. His goal on Sunday was off a penalty kick that he earned. It is the American’s third goal in three EPL matches as Fulham is in the starting to find their form of last season where they finished 7th in the league table. Dempsey has arguably been the most consistent and solid player for Fulham in the midfield this season.

Marcus Tracy (ST) – Aalborg beat FC Copenhagen 1-0 – 1 goal – Video Highlights

Tracy played 74 minutes and scored the game winner in the 58th minute for Aalborg in the Danish league on Sunday. It was his first goal of the season for the club as he’s only played in 4 matches in the Danish SAS-Ligaen. The striker has a lot of potential but will need to get consistent playing time if he wants a shot at the National Team or one of the bigger leagues in Europe.

Tim Howard (GK) – Everton beat West Ham United 2-1 – 4 saves – Video Highlights

Howard and Everton got a much needed 2-1 win over West Ham. The one goal conceded was an own goal and Howard had a solid match. Everton is in 12th after the win and has struggled to score goals in the 2009-10 EPL season. Despite conceding only 17 goals (in part to Howard’s solid goalkeeping), Everton has only scored 15 goals in 15 matches. The club seems heading in the right direction but has to face Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham within the next 5 weeks.

Jozy Altidore (ST) – Hull City beat Stoke City 2-1 – Video Highlights

Jozy finally got a start for Hull as the club beat Stoke at home on Sunday. He had a decent match and was subbed out in the second half. He’s still inconsistent at times and will need consistent playing time if he wants to be match fit for next summer’s world cup. Altidore should get some playing time in the friendlies coming up for the USA National Team as they play Denmark and Slovakia.

Carlos Bocanegra (LB) – Rennes lost to Toulouse 2-3

Bocanegra started the match for French Ligue 1 side as they lost on Sunday. With Rennes losing 1-3, Bocanegra was taken out for forward as the club needed a more offensive formation. Carlos remains a regular starter the club at left back but has been playing a center back role for the USA National Team. Rennes is currently in the middle of the Ligue 1 table through 12 matches.

Steve Cherundolo (RB) – Hannover 96 drew 2-2 with Hamburg – Video Highlights

Cherundolo played the full match for Hannover as they earned a 2-2 draw against Hamburg on Sunday. The American is a consistent starter for Hannover who are in the middle of the German Bundesliga table. Cherundolo will likely be with the USA National Team for next summer’s World Cup and is a very experienced player.

Jonathon Spector (LB) West Ham United lost to Everton 1-2 – Video Highlights

Spector played the full match but the club lost to Everton at home. After struggling with injuries, Spector is finally getting regular time at West Ham United and performed well for the USA National Team at the Confederations Cup. The American has been competing with Steve Cherundolo for the starting spot in the back four and is very likely to be in next summer’s World Cup roster.

Kenny Cooper (ST) 1860 Munich lost Energie Cottbus 0-1

Cooper came on the 74th minute as 1860 lost on Sunday. After getting some a few starts for the club, he has been a second half substitute for the last month. Cooper will need to be starting for the club if he’s to earn a spot in the roster for next summer’s world cup. 1860 Munich is struggling in the Bundesliga 2 and currently in the relegation zone.

Michael Parkhurst (D) – FC Nordsjaelland beat Sonderjyske 1-0

Parkhurst has been a consistent starter for Nordsjaelland in the Danish League. As a central defender, he’s yet to score a goal and the club has struggled offensively. Currently they are in 9th place and 9 points above the relegation zone.

In the French Ligue 1, Carlos Bocanegra was with Stade Rennais and Charlie Davies for Sochaux. Steve Cherundolo for Hannover 96 played in the German Bundesliga while Kenny Cooper continues to have an impact for Bundesligs 2 side 1860 Munich. Here’s a recap of these players in this weekend’s matches along with video highlights for each match.

Carlos Bocanegra (LB) – Stade Rennais – French Ligue 1 - draw with Lens 2-2 – Video Highlights

Bocanegra and Rennes got a draw at Lens with a 90th minute goal from Asamoah. The American played the full match but had not shots on goals. He continues to be a regular starter for the club as they are currently in the middle of the table but looking to earn a spot in European soccer for next season.

Charlie Davies (ST) – Sochaux – French Ligue 1 – beat AS Monaco 1-0 – Video Highlights

Davies started and played 85 minute for Sochaux as they beat Monaco 1-0. The goal came off a penalty kick converted by Sverkos but was earned by Davies. He continues to impress in France and should retain his spot in the starting lineup. Besides earning the penalty that set up the game winning goal, Davies had a shot on goal and earned a few free kicks.

Steve Cherundolo (RB) – Hannover 96 – German Bundesliga – lost to Hoffenheim 0-1 – Video Highlights

Cherundolo played the full match for Hannover as they lost to Hoffenheim 0-1 at home. He won a few free kicks in the match but had no shots or assists. Hannover 96 is 13th in the league table and could be in a relegation battle if the first four matches are any indicator.

Kenny Cooper (ST) – 1860 Munich – German Bundesliga 2 – draw with Ahlen 0-0

Cooper started and played the full math for 1860 Munich but they failed to score against Ahlen. He had two shots during the match with one on goal. After only four matches since transferring from FC Dallas, Cooper has two goals and adjusting well to his new team.

In France, Carlos Bocanegra continues to be a regular start for Stade Rennais as they challenge for a spot in European soccer next season while Charlie Davies is adjusting quickly to his new team Sochaux. Steve Cherundolo continues to play significant minutes for Hannover 96 as they got a nice road win on Saturday. Here’s a recap of these three players as they played in matches on Saturday.

Carlos Bocanegra (LB) – Stade Rennais – French Ligue 1 – 1-1 draw with Marseille – Video Highlights

Bocanegra continues to start and be a consistent player in the back four for Rennes who are in the middle of the table after three matches. They took an early lead on Saturday against Marseille but couldn’t hold it as the match ended at 1-1. He nearly had an assist in the match as he passed to Asamoah who hit the post with a header. Overall, Rennes has had good results early and has a decent chance at a Europa League spot.

Charlie Davies (ST) – Sochaux – French Ligue 1 – lost to Montpellier 0-2 – Video Highlights

After a great start, including two goals in last weeks match, Davies was in the starting lineup and played about 70 minutes. He earned several free kicks during the match and had a shot on goal but the team struggled to convert any chance. It seems they will be one of the clubs in the relegation battle as they are 1-0-2 so far on the season.

Steve Cherundolo (RB) – Hannover 96 – German Bundesliga – beat FC Nuremberg 2-0 – Video Highlights

Cherundolo played the whole game for Hannover as they got a nice road win on Saturday. Hannover had the better chances (7 shots on goal to 0 for Nuremberg) and is looking to improve on last season’s middle of the table position. He had no shots during the match.

In France, Charlie Davies had his debut for Sochaux while Carlos Bocanegra has become a regular for Rennes. In Germany, Michael Bradley played for Monchengladbach while Steve Cherundolo started for Hannover 96. Here’s a recap of the Americans abroad in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga along with video highlights.

Carlos Bocanegra (LB) – Stade Rennais (Rennes) – Ligue 1- beat Boulogne 3-0 – Video Highlights

Bocanegra started and played the full match for Rennes who won easily against Boulogne at home to start the Ligue 1 season. The club finish in the top 10 least season but reach the French Cup final and will be looking to build on that success with a spot in European football. The American defender had one shot (not on goal) and will be with the National Team on Wednesday for the Mexico match.

Charlie Davies (ST) – Sochaux – Ligue 1 – beat Auxerre 1-0 – Video Highlights

Davies just transferred from Swedish club Hammarby over the summer and played 20 minutes in his debut for Sochaux as they won 1-0 in the season opener. Although he didn’t get much playing time, Davies had a shot on goal and won some free kicks. He’s will also be with the National Team against Mexico during the week.

Steve Cherundolo (RB) – Hannover – Bundesliga – lost to Hertha Berlin 0-1 – Video Highlights

Cherundolo started and played the full match for Hannover as they fell to Hertha 0-1 on the road. The American right back had an injury at the end of last season but appears to be fully recovered and will be with the National Team against Mexico. In the match, Cherundolo earned a yellow card and had no shots on goal.

Michael Bradley (MF) – Borussia Monchengladbach – Bundesliga – draw 3-3 with Bochum – Video Highlights

Bradley started the match for Monchengladbach and played 70 minutes as they gave up a 3-0 lead after halftime. The German club just barely escaped relegation and will probably have a similar problem this season as well. In the match he earned a yellow card and had no shots on goal.

Kenny Cooper (ST) – 1860 Munich – Bundesliga 2 – beat Koblenz 2- Video Highlights (scored 1 goal)

Cooper had a dream start for 1860 Munich after just transferring from MLS side FC Dallas as he scored a goal in the 17th minute. The goal was scored off a header in the box off a cros as he was in great position and beat the goalkeeper. The American played 72 minutes before being subbed out in the 2nd half to a standing ovation from the 1860 Munich fans. He had several shots on goal and seems to have adjusted quickly to the German 2nd division.

Here’s the latest recap and video highlights including Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, Oguchi Onyewu, Brad Guzan, Eric Lichaj, and Steve Cherundolo.

Tim Howard – Everton – English Premier League – Video Highlights

Howard made some key saves as Everton defeated the MLS All-Stars on penalty kicks. The goalkeeper continues to be the backbone of the club providing consistent performances and keeping his team in every match. Everton was 5th last year in the EPL and is looking to crack into the top 4 but will have a busy schedule as they are in the Europa League as well.

Clint Dempsey – Fulham – English Premier League – Video Highlights

Dempsey and Fulham began their season with play in the 3rd Qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. Fulham won 3-0 against FK Vetra as Dempsey played most of the match. The American has usually played at right midfield and continued in Thursday’s match. Fellow American Eddie Johnson suited up for the match but remained on the bench.

Oguchi Onyewu – AC Milan – Italian Serie A – Video Highlights

Onyewu has played for Milan in most of their preseason matches including this week’s Audi Cup. He has struggled adjusting to his new club and made a few defensive mistake that have led to goals. It’s not all bad for Onyewu that has also shown improvement from each match and the ability to be dangerous on corner and free kicks with his size.

Brad Guzan and Eric Lichaj – Aston Villa – English Premier League – Video Highlights

Guzan played the full match for Aston Villa in the Peace Cup against Atlante as they won 3-1 and qualified for the semifinals of the tournament. Lichal also played the full match as the team came from an 0-1 deficit to score 3 unanswered goals. Aston Villa plays FC Porto in the semifinals on Friday July 31st.

Steve Cherundolo – Hannover 96 – German Bundesliga – Video Highlights

Cherundolo played with Hannover against Arsenal in a friendly as the team lost 0-1. The American played 73 minutes and seems to be recovering fine from an injury last spring.
