The 2010 New York Football Challenge concludes with the New York Red Bulls taking on EPL side Manchester City. The match will take place at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on Sunday, July 25, 2010. Kickoff is scheduled for 15:30 EST or 20:30 UK time.

It will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel in the United States, ESPN in the United Kingdom, Orange Sport in France, Sport TV 1 in Portugal, and on C+ Sport across Europe. You can also find the match at the link on the bottom of this post.

New York Red Bulls v Manchester City Preview

Both teams lost their opening match in the tournament and be looking to improve on Sunday’s match. The Red Bulls started off strong against Tottenham with a first half goal from Thierry Henry but two defensive mistakes cost them the victory. Manchester City struggled to get into their match against Sporting Lisbon and were held scoreless.

The Red Bulls were without leading scorer Juan Pablo Angel but he could return for Sunday’s match. The arrival of Henry immediately gave the club a spark and they played well in the first half against Spurs. Dane Richards, who has tons of speed but has struggled, looked good and midfielder Joel Lundpere provided the assist on the Henry goal. Overall, the team is still in search of another designated player which will likely be Rafa Marquez.

Manchester City were not impressive in their match against Sporting. They didn’t score any goals and couldn’t match the energy of the Portuguese side. They are without many of their World Cup players but still have a strong roster. They should have chances in this match and benefit in the second half when the Red Bulls put in their younger players.

Henry has given the Red Bulls some confidence and it should be an interesting match. If Angel is able to play, then a draw or win wouldn’t be out of the question for the MLS side. Man City is far from their best form at this point and without some of their best players. In the end, it should be a match where NY starts out strong but in the second half they are likely to concede a few goals.

Betting Odds

New York Red Bulls win – 5/2

Draw – 13/5

Manchester City win – 4/5

With the New York Red Bulls still having another designated players slot available after signing Thierry, reports are now coming out that Rafa Marquez is likely to join the club. Marquez played at FC Barcelona with Henry but like the Frenchmen has lost his place in the starting line-up and could jump start his career with a move out of Spain.

This would be another great signing for the Red Bulls who could get a player who could play a holding/defensive midfield position and also fill in at center-back when needed. Below is a report from Goal.com which broke the story.

Goal.com

Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez is to join Thierry Henry at New York Red Bulls on a four-year contract,Goal.com can exclusively reveal.

The 31-year old defender had eyed a move to Major League Soccer before playing at World Cup 2010 with Mexico. After starring for his nation in South Africa, he has now negotiated a release from his contract with the La Liga champions – which was set to run until 2012 – and has put pen to paper on a lucrative deal in the ‘Big Apple’.

Speaking exclusively to Goal.com, a well placed source confirmed the deal will be officially announced next week.

“Marquez has signed for a four-year contract with the New York Red Bulls and will join up with Thierry Henry,” they said.

“Marquez has gained his contract release from Barcelona and will get a salary of £2 million per season. The official announcement of the deal will be next week.”

Thierry Henry played his first match for the New York Red Bulls as they hosted Tottenham Hotspur in the first match of the New York Football Challenge. The match is part of a mini-tournament which also includes Sporting Lisbon and Manchester City.

New York Red Bulls 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur Recap

Tottenham Hotspur would come back from an 0-1 deficit to win 2-1 against the Red Bulls.

The New York Red Bulls would start off strong and see Henry score his first goal in the 25th minute. It could have been his second of the match as the Frenchmen had a great chance earlier in the match but couldn’t convert. Overall, both teams had chances but it would end at 1-0 after 45 minutes.

Both teams made several changes in the second half and Spurs would eventually take the lead. They would tie the match at 1-1 in the 62nd minute as there was poor defense on a corner kick. The Red Bulls failed to clear and Robbie Keane capitalized by volleying it into the back of the net.

The match winning goal would come in the 72nd minute as Gareth Bale would take advantage of another Red Bull defensive lapse. A header back to the goalkeeper was short as Bale was able to get to it quickly and poke it into the back of the net.

Overall, it was a good performance from the Red Bulls but their defensive mistakes cost them too much. Also, Henry only played the first half and they were without their top scorer, Juan Pablo Angel because of an injury.

The New York Football Challenge begins with the debut of Thierry Henry for the New York Red Bulls as they face Tottenham Hotspur. The match will take place at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on Thursday, July 22, 2010. Kickoff is scheduled for 20:00 EST or 01:00 UK time (technically July 23).

It will be televised on Fox Soccer Channel in the United States and on ESPN in the United Kingdom. Sport TV 1 in Portugal, and on C+ Sport & SportKlub across Europe. You can also find the match at the link on the bottom of this post.

New York Red Bulls v Tottenham Hotspur Preview

It is the debut of Thierry Henry for the Red Bulls after the French striker left FC Barcelona in the off-season. The Red Bulls are a much improved side from the 2009 season when they were dead last in MLS. Besides Henry, the Red Bulls have former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel, as one of their designated players.

Tottenham Hotspur are coming off a 0-0 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes where they lacked the ability to finish in the final third. They are still without a few players from the 2010 World Cup which will give a chance to the youth of the club. Gareth Bale continues to impress on the back line while Roman Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane will be the main scoring threats.

The Red Bulls should have a very strong crowd but there will definitely be a decent mount of Spurs fans. It’s a match that should attract a lot of attention from press around the world with Henry’s debut but how will the Red Bulls play? They’ve struggled to score goals and it will take time for Henry to adjust to his new team. He and Angel will be the main threats but the Red Bulls are still lacking some quality in the midfield.

It’s a match where both teams will want to entertain and play attacking football. Both sides will use several substitutions so the match will likely have a different feel from the first to the second half. The pace should remain high with the amount of changes and excitement of an EPL side playing in New York.

Overall, I see NY playing a solid match because of Thierry Henry but ultimately Tottenham should get a draw.

Betting Odds

New York Red Bulls win – 9/4

Draw – 9/4

Tottenham Hotspur win – evens
