MLS 2010 Playoff Conference Semifinals 1st Leg Predictions

The top team in Major League Soccer hosts a Western Conference rival as the LA Galaxy play the SJ Earthquakes. The match will take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on Thursday, July 22, 2010. Kickoff is scheduled for 22:30 EST (East Coast), 19:30 EST (West Coast), and 03:30 BST (UK time, July 23).

Los Angeles Galaxy v San Jose Earthquakes Preview

Landon Donovan and the Galaxy have been dominant this season with only eight goals conceded in 17 matches. Combined with a stellar defense, LA has the offensive threat of Edson Buddle and Donovan. Along with those two players, Brazilian Juninho has been a solid contributor (he’s on loan) and defender Omar Gonzalez is quickly becoming one of the best central defenders in MLS.

The Earthquakes are an improved side from last season and in position to make a playoff spot. They’ve only played 14 matches would move up to 4th place in the Western Conference. One of the keys has been the play of Bobby Convey, who previously was with English club Reading, who is second in MLS with eight assists.

LA will be favored in the match but MLS is a league where anything can happen on any matchday. With that being said, San Jose will be aiming for a draw with the Galaxy in great form. LA are simply playing better than anyone in MLS and strong on both ends of the pitch.

It should be another typical Galaxy victory with a clean sheet or at most one goal conceded.

Spurs were held scoreless by San Jose

Tottenham Hotspur began their pre-season USA tour with a trip to the West Coast to face the San Jose Earthquakes. It was the first match of several for Spurs in the States while the Earthquakes would return to MLS action next week.

It was a scoreless match as both teams showed an inability to finish in the final third.

Tottenham for the most part were the better team but struggled to find the final pass or finish in front of goal. Robbie Keane had a few chances in both halves but couldn’t convert. Spurs were able to find plenty of space out wide, especially on the left hand side, as Townsend and Bale were able to stretch the defense.

San Jose would get chances as well but lacked the cutting edge in the final third. It was a warm day which forced the pace of the match to slow considerably in the second half. Both teams made several changes in the second half but the score would remain 0-0.

Overall, it was the first pre-season match for Tottenham and they were without a few of their top players. For San Jose, the match should give them some confidence and one of several impressive results by MLS teams against European sides.

Fresh off their 4th place finish in the 2009-10 English Premier League season, Tottenham Hotspur kicks off their pre-season USA tour with a match against MLS side San Jose Earthquakes. The match will take place at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Saturday, July 17, 2010. Kickoff is scheduled for 16:00 EST and 21:00 BST (UK time).

San Jose Earthquakes v Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Spurs are preparing for a busy season in which they will be competing in the UEFA Champions League as well as the English Premier League. Players who competed in the 2010 World Cup will not be available but they still will have a very strong side against San Jose.

The Earthquakes are a team in the middle of the Western Conference are a side with no marquee players. They are a balanced side that doesn’t have great weaknesses defensively or offensively but at the same time do not have a major strengths.

It’s a match where San Jose are in mid-season form while the Spurs are likely to show a little bit of rust in their first pre-season match. Gareth Bale, Luka Modric, Robbie Keane, Niko Kranjcar, and Roman Pavlyuchenko will be the main threas for the Earthquakes defense. San Jose are led by Chris Wondolowski with six goals in the MLS season followed by Arturo Alvarez with three and Ike Opara with three.

Spurs are clearly the better side but there are factors that should make it a fairly even match. The home field advantage should help San Jose along with the fact they are facing Tottenham in their pre-season mode and without a few of their regular starters.

It should be a match that is fairly open with plenty of chances and a draw seems probable. MLS sides have done well so far in friendlies this season against clubs from Europe & South America and it should be no different in this match.

Toronto FC, another team with great fan support, just missed out on their first playoff spot. They were too inconsistent and losing 0-5 at NY was an embarassment. Other notable storylines for the resurgence of the Los Angeles Galaxy, who with Beckham and Donovan, were the top team in the Western Conference. With the end of the regular season, this is the final list of power rankings for Major League Soccer.

1. Los Angeles Galaxy – They have a well balanced club that are one of the favorites to win the MLS Cup. Donovan is in terrific form and if he can deliver in the playoffs it could be time for him to follow teammate David Beckham and transfer to Europe.
2. Columbus Crew – A meaningless loss on Sunday against New England as Columbus had the Supporter’s Shield already clinched. The Crew are the favorites to reach the MLS Cup Final in a weaker Eastern Conference.
3. Houston Dynamo – A talented team who is tied for the fewest goals conceded with only 29 through 30 matches. They should reach the Western Conference Finals but will need Brian Ching and Stuart Holden to have good performances.
4. Seattle Sounders FC – They may be in their first year as a franchise but the Sounders are as dangerous as anyone. Freddie Ljungberg as adjusted well to the league and Kasey Keller has been a wall in goal.
5. Chivas USA – The team has been up and down after a terrific start. Sacha Kljestan appears to have found his form and the club will need it against the Galaxy.
6. Chicago Fire – The Fire limped into the playoffs as the second placed team in the Eastern Conference. With Blanco and McBride they can win any match but the defense is the real question mark.
7. New England Revolution – Another club that didn’t finish strong and had to get a result in the last weekend to make the playoffs. They are the only team to make the playoffs with a negative goal differential.
8. Real Salt Lake – They just made the playoffs and note likely to advance very far in the playoffs. The key will be improving their form on the road.
9. DC United – Their busy schedule with the US Open Cup, Champions League, and MLS schedule caught up to them in the final part of the season. They were always within reach of a playoff spot but couldn’t get the result in the final weeks. The defense is the focus in the offseason as they conceded 44 goals in 30 matches.
10. Colorado Rapids – The Rapids were in position to qualify in the final few weeks but couldn’t get the results when they needed them. A team that is close to being a contender but needs some help in the midfield and defense.
11. FC Dallas – They made a late run and almost came out of nowhere to make the playoffs. They were one of the better teams in the last few months and Jeff Cunningham was the MLS leading scorer with 17 goals.
12. Toronto FC – The lack of defense was their achilles heel as Toronto once again failed to make the playoffs. They need to make moves in the transfer market.
13. San Jose Earthquakes – San Jose had talent but never really got going until the final month or so of the season.
14. Kansas City Wizards – The Wizards were never considered one of the top teams and struggled in July, August, and September.
15. New York Red Bulls – A 5-0 win against Toronto does little for the Red Bulls who were simply horrible this season. Next season they have a new arena and rumors are that Thierry Henry will be transferring after the World Cup. It should provide a much needed boost to the franchise and specifically their attendance.
